Top Ten Tuesday #80: Ten Books We Struggled to Get Through (Or Didn't Get Through at All!)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Ten Books I Struggled to Get Into But Ended Up Loving or Ten Books That Were A Chore To Get Through or Ten Books I've Most Recently Put Down (the theme is...books you had a hard time with...tweak it how ever you need)

Tina's Picks
Books I had to DNF
Either it was a cover buy or the blurb that caught my attention, in the end the story could not keep my interest

I enjoyed her 2017 release What to Say Next. I thought Tell Me Three Things will have a similar feel. Unfortunately, the main character is not relatable and her experiences were not believeable, I gave up after a few chapters.

I was excited to get back into the Passengers series. However, the story format was chaotic and the characters appearing in and out of the story confused me. I couldn't follow no matter how often I tried to reread the first chapters.

It sounded funny. It was a little too close to home - loud, whiny, full of complaints, disappointments, and expectations. Immediate dnf.

Books I've To Put Down

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff - After reading a hundred or so pages, I was not drawn into the world or the story. I read a review, that said the story pick up after 200 pages but I wasn't willing to invest any more time into the story to see if that was true.

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1) by Sarah J. Maas - I have come to accept the fact that I am not a fan of Sarah J. Maas writing.

The Beginning: Marked and Betrayed (House of Night #1-2) by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast - This was a two in one book. I struggle to finish book one.

Good Boy (WAGs #1) by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy - This was such a disappointment for me. I love Him and Us and I was eager to see how Jamie and Ryan story end but this was so bad I made it to the wedding reception and quit. I could not get invested into these new characters.

Twisted Palace (The Royals #3) by Erin Watt - Another disappointment for me because I enjoy book one and two so much.

Books That Were A Chore To Get Through

Black Diamond (Stark Springs Academy #1) by Ali Dean
I don't know what happened, the book start off so promising and towards the end it kind of just fizzle out.

Double Black (Stark Springs Academy #2) by Ali Dean
Basically, book 2 was just a set up for book 3.

Black Ice (Stark Springs Academy #3) by Ali Dean
It was an end to a series.

  1. I had some trouble with Illuminae, but I managed to get through it. I can totally see why you'd put it down though. Great list! :-)

  2. I've been wanting to read Illuminae for a while but the physical size of the book kind of intimidates me because I find longer books can be harder to get into.

    1. Don't let the size intimidate you. If not a traditional book. It's in email format and redacted document. Thanks for stopping by. Happy reading.

  3. I thought Tell Me three Things looked kinda fun, but it's hard when characters are not relatable. And Illuminae was just okay for me, although I did like the second one a lot better.

  4. The only one I've read is Illuminae, which I did really love. I like the writing style though and it makes it a quicker read that way.

    1. That's the reason I was so excited to read the book because so many people enjoy reading it and I'm a little disappointed that I couldn't get into it.

  5. I haven't read any from either list, although I've had my eye on Illuminae for some time now. It's always hard when you can't get into a book you think you'll like. Thank you for sharing! I hope you have a great week!

  6. I haven't read any of these books yet, but I find it interesting how people react to different books in the same series. Sometimes they dislike all of them. Sometimes they like one but don't like the rest. Fascinating stuff!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

    1. That's one of the things I love about the book community. There is something for everyone . For example Tina love Sarah J. Maas, I on the other hand find her books very dull and boring. I love Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen series, Tina think is the most boring thing in the world.

  7. I struggled with ACOTAR, but I did finish it, because I love Sarah J Maas' books.

  8. Well your list is a little disappointing because I just bought Crazy Rich Asians. Hopefully, my response is different but it's good to know opinions of the book are mixed.

    1. Haha... it was on my top list too! I was equally excited AND bummed. I was so looking forward to it but I don't think it was organized well enough to be read.

  10. Aw, I have heard SO many people say that about Wayfarer, and it bums me out because I wanted to read the series, but I know I got kind of bored at the end of the author's last series, so... Idk. And I think I have finally come to the same realization about Sarah J Maas too- I kept trying but... WHY bother?

    1. I gave Passenger the benefit of the doubt and really put my heart into it! I was looking forward to Wayfarer and couldn't believe how hard I had to try to stay focused. It was just too much work...
