Can't-Wait Wednesday / Waiting On Wednesday #CWW #WOW

Title: Hello Girls
Author: Brittany Cavallaro, Emily Henry
Expected Publication: August 6th 2019
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult

Best friends are forged by fire. For Winona Olsen and Lucille Pryce, that fire happened the night they met outside the police station—both deciding whether to turn their families in.

Winona has been starving for life in the seemingly perfect home that she shares with her seemingly perfect father, celebrity weatherman Stormy Olsen. No one knows that he locks the pantry door to control her eating and leaves bruises where no one can see them.

Lucille has been suffocating beneath the needs of her mother and her drug-dealing brother, wondering if there’s more out there for her than disappearing waitress tips and generations of barely getting by.

One harrowing night, Winona and Lucille realize they can’t wait until graduation to start their new lives. They need out. Now. All they need is three grand, fast. And really, a stolen convertible to take them from Michigan to Las Vegas can’t hurt.

Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult, Mythology

A fresh and addictive fantasy-romance set in modern-day Seoul.

Eighteen-year-old Gu Miyoung has a secret--she's a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men in order to survive. Because so few believe in the old tales anymore, and with so many evil men no one will miss, the modern city of Seoul is the perfect place to hide and hunt.

But after feeding one full moon, Miyoung crosses paths with Jihoon, a human boy, being attacked by a goblin deep in the forest. Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead--her gumiho soul--in the process.

Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl--he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to humans. He's drawn to her anyway.

With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon's.

Review
After following xtinemay on booktube for years, I was surprised to learn that she has published a book. The book is inspired by xtinemay's semester of studying abroad during her college years.

Again, but Better is separated into 2 parts: year 2011 and year 2017. The story begins with a youthful Shane traveling abroad to England with big shining eyes and a bright smile. She makes long lasting friendship with her flatmates and meets a guy named Pilot who has her heart. Her journey is one of self discovery as she tries to follow a different path that's different from one chosen for her by her parents. A hiccup happens during her semester and it wasn't all roses and sunshine.

Now it's year 2017. Shane is brilliant in her career but lost touch with her cousins, no longer speaks to her parents, have an unfulfilling love realtionship, feels jaded. She thinks back to 2011 and wonders if she could do it all over again. What choices would she make? How would she heal her relationships?

She seeks out Pilot in 2017 and they were given a chance to redo and live 6 years again. Shane discovers so much about herself and those around her. She relives 2011 as a 26 year old knowing what she knows, she chooses her paths carefully and makes better informed decisions.

I think Again, but Better is a really cute contemporary romance. I can see the changes in Shane as she grows from a naive fearful child to a capable independent woman. I enjoyed the plot dramas and heavy conflicts. If I hadn't known this story was written by Christine, I would have thought it was written by any contemporay author. Well done for a debut novel.
